Here's the gist with Yaz (ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone): your birth control pill is processed by the liver, and there have been rare reports of turmeric, especially the concentrated, high-absorption supplements taken in big doses, stressing the liver. The worry is that combining two things that lean on the liver could, in theory, raise the chance of liver irritation. I want to be honest though, this is based on scattered anecdotal reports, not strong studies.

The sprinkle of turmeric in your curry is not the concern here. If you take a daily curcumin capsule, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual fatigue, and call your provider if those show up.

Turmeric might increase or decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro and animal research show that turmeric and its constituents curcumin and curcuminoids inhibit CYP3A4. Also, 8 case reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) adverse drug reaction database describe increased toxicity in patients taking turmeric and cancer medications that are CYP3A4 substrates, including everolimus, ruxolitinib, ibrutinib, and palbociclib, and bortezomib. In another case report, a transplant patient presented with acute nephrotoxicity and elevated tacrolimus levels after consuming turmeric powder at a dose of 15 or more spoonfuls daily for ten days prior. It was thought that turmeric increased levels of tacrolimus due to CYP3A4 inhibition.
Conversely, other in vitro research suggests that turmeric induces CYP3A4 activity, leading to reduced levels of CYP3A4 substrates. An animal model suggests that induction of CYP3A4 occurs after daily curcumin use for 1 week. However, the induction of CYP3A4 by turmeric has not been reported in humans.

Here's the deal with your Yaz (ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone) and turmeric. Your body partly clears the estrogen in your pill using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Turmeric, mainly its curcumin compounds, can tug on that same enzyme. The tricky part is the research pulls in two directions: in lab and animal studies it sometimes blocks the enzyme (which could nudge hormone levels up) and sometimes speeds it up (which could lower them).

I want to be honest with you, though: this is based on test-tube and animal work, not solid human data, so it's far from proven. The turmeric you sprinkle on food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question. Before starting one, just check with your pharmacist or doctor so your birth control keeps working reliably.

Here's the short version on combining turmeric with your Yaz (ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone). The hormones in your pill are partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In lab and animal studies, the curcumin in turmeric can slow that enzyme down a bit. If it did that in real life, your pill's hormone levels could drift slightly higher, which in theory might mean more of the usual nuisances like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or spotting.

But I want to keep this in perspective. This is a minor, theoretical concern based only on test-tube and animal work, and even that research disagrees with itself. The turmeric you sprinkle on food is very unlikely to matter. If you're taking concentrated curcumin capsules, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Turmeric may gently block a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which acts like a gatekeeper in your gut. In theory, blocking it could let a little more of your pill's hormones get absorbed. That might slightly raise your exposure to estrogen and drospirenone, and in turn could mean more of the usual nuisances like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or spotting.

Here's the bottom line on combining turmeric with Yaz (which contains ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone): the concern is mostly theoretical. In lab dish studies, curcumin (the active part of turmeric) can nudge estrogen off its receptors. The worry is that very large, concentrated turmeric doses might blunt the estrogen part of your birth control just a little, which could in theory affect how reliably it works.
