Here's the simple version: both turmeric (in concentrated supplement form) and Fostamatinib (Tavalisse) can be tough on the liver. Fostamatinib already carries a known risk of raising liver enzymes, which is why your doctor checks bloodwork while you're on it. The worry is that adding high-dose turmeric on top could add a little extra strain to the liver.

To be honest, this is mostly a theoretical concern based on scattered case reports, not strong proof, and it's tied to concentrated, high-absorption curcumin products rather than the turmeric you sprinkle in cooking. Food amounts are very unlikely to matter. Before starting any turmeric supplement, run it past your pharmacist or doctor so they can factor it into your liver monitoring.

Fostamatinib also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Turmeric might increase or decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro and animal research show that turmeric and its constituents curcumin and curcuminoids inhibit CYP3A4. Also, 8 case reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) adverse drug reaction database describe increased toxicity in patients taking turmeric and cancer medications that are CYP3A4 substrates, including everolimus, ruxolitinib, ibrutinib, and palbociclib, and bortezomib. In another case report, a transplant patient presented with acute nephrotoxicity and elevated tacrolimus levels after consuming turmeric powder at a dose of 15 or more spoonfuls daily for ten days prior. It was thought that turmeric increased levels of tacrolimus due to CYP3A4 inhibition.
Conversely, other in vitro research suggests that turmeric induces CYP3A4 activity, leading to reduced levels of CYP3A4 substrates. An animal model suggests that induction of CYP3A4 occurs after daily curcumin use for 1 week. However, the induction of CYP3A4 by turmeric has not been reported in humans.

Here's the thing about Tavalisse (fostamatinib): your body processes its active form using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Turmeric's curcumin compounds may slow that same enzyme down, at least based on lab and animal studies. If that happens, your fostamatinib could clear out more slowly and build up a bit. In real life that might mean more of the side effects we already watch for, like diarrhea, high blood pressure, nausea, or changes in liver tests.

I want to be honest though: this is mostly theoretical, drawn from test-tube data and a handful of reports with other drugs, not fostamatinib itself. Everyday cooking amounts of turmeric are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated curcumin capsules are the bigger question. Before adding any turmeric supplement, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Fostamatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tavalisse

Tavalisse (fostamatinib) is used to treat thrombocytopenia — dangerously low platelet counts — in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). It is specifically for people whose platelet counts have not improved enough with at least one earlier ITP treatment.

The goal is to raise platelet counts high enough to reduce the risk of serious bleeding. If platelet counts do not respond sufficiently after 12 weeks, the medication is typically stopped.
