Vinpocetine and Dalteparin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Dalteparin

Dalteparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Vinpocetine interacts with.

Vinpocetine might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical research shows that vinpocetine decreases red blood cell aggregation, as well as plasma and whole blood viscosity. This effect has been seen with intravenous vinpocetine 1 mg/kg and oral vinpocetine 30 mg daily. Vinpocetine also seems to have antiplatelet effects.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Dalteparin (Fragmin) is already a blood thinner, so its whole job is to make your blood less likely to clot. Here's the thing about vinpocetine: research suggests it can make platelets less sticky and may thin the blood slightly on its own. Stack that on top of dalteparin, and you could be tipping the scales a bit further toward bleeding.

What that looks like in real life is things like easier bruising, bleeding gums, nosebleeds, or in rarer cases more serious bleeding. The evidence here is moderate, not alarming, but since dalteparin is a strong medication you don't want to add anything that nudges your risk up without a plan. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining these two.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dalteparin page

“Dalteparin (Fragmin) is an injectable blood thinner used to prevent and treat dangerous clots, which is exactly why this list warrants real vigilance, and nearly all 218 ingredients on it thin the blood too. They are herbs and extracts with clot-inhibiting or antiplatelet effects of their own, so stacking them on dalteparin can push bl…”

About Dalteparin Injection

What Is Dalteparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fragmin

Fragmin is used to prevent clot-related problems in several situations. These include unstable angina and non-Q-wave heart attack (taken with aspirin), and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after hip or abdominal surgery or during an acute illness that severely limits movement.

It is also used to treat symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE, a clot in a vein) and lower the chance it comes back. This applies to adults with cancer and to children from birth (gestational age at least 35 weeks). Fragmin is not indicated for the acute treatment of VTE.
