Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination product contains codeine, an opioid that already makes many people feel drowsy, foggy, or slow to react. Wild lettuce has its own mild calming, sedative-type activity, so the concern here is simply stacking two relaxing things on top of each other. Together they could leave you more sleepy than expected, with extra dizziness, slowed thinking, or even slower breathing in larger amounts.

To be fair, this caution is theoretical, based on how each acts on the nervous system rather than on strong human studies of the pair. Still, since codeine is a real opioid, it is worth being careful. If you take this medicine regularly, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding wild lettuce, and avoid driving until you know how the mix affects you.
