Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Partial disclosure
This product contains 6 ingredients, mostly omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids from chia and echium seed oils, plus the carotenoid astaxanthin as an antioxidant. The omega-3 blend includes stearidonic acid, a shorter-chain precursor to the longer-chain omega-3s your body needs.
Gamma-linolenic acid rounds out the omega-6 profile. The inactive ingredients are gelatin and silica, used as a capsule shell and anti-caking agent.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for chia seed oil on its intended uses — high cholesterol and weight — is rated possibly ineffective in our data. For astaxanthin, the evidence on age-related vision loss, cognitive decline, skin aging, and athletic performance is insufficient to rate reliably.
In short, neither ingredient has strong established benefit for the conditions typically marketed here, and we don't hold effectiveness data for the other active components.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chia is well tolerated in food amounts and generally well tolerated in studies, though high supplement doses have not been well studied — stick to food portions and check with your doctor if you're taking concentrated supplements. The most common side effects from chia are flatulence and soft stools; anaphylaxis in sensitive individuals is rare.
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated, but long-term safety data are limited. At typical doses (6 mg daily), some people have had increased bowel movements and red fecal color; higher doses (40 mg daily) have caused severe abdominal pain in a small number of trial participants.
Astaxanthin is not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist if you take drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 — that's a broad category that includes immunosuppressants, many statins, some cancer medications, and oral contraceptives. Astaxanthin may reduce their levels, making them less effective.
We could not check gamma-linolenic acid, stearidonic acid, or echium seed oil for interactions, so additional interactions may exist.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glancePartially disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're looking to boost omega-3s from whole-food sources, this product delivers them with astaxanthin as an antioxidant. But the evidence that it works for cholesterol or weight is weak, and the liver-enzyme interactions are real — especially if you take immunosuppressants, statins, cancer drugs, or hormonal contraceptives.
Talk with your pharmacist before starting, and expect mild stomach upset as a possibility.

Chia & Echium Omega-3 by Douglas Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chia & Echium Omega-3 by Douglas Laboratories contains astaxanthin, which has documented interactions with certain medications.
The most serious concern is with drugs metabolized by your liver's cytochrome P450 enzymes — specifically CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 substrates — where astaxanthin may theoretically decrease drug levels. This effect has been observed in lab studies but has not yet been reported in people.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 672 individual medications. These are chiefly drugs processed through CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 pathways, where astaxanthin's enzyme-inducing effect could reduce how well the medication works.
We could not check gamma-linolenic acid, stearidonic acid, or echium seed oil for interactions, so gaps may exist in our data.
Before you start this product, run your exact medications through the checker below. If you take anything metabolized by these liver enzymes — especially immunosuppressants, certain statins, some cancer drugs, or birth control — flag it with your pharmacist or doctor.

For each ingredient in Chia & Echium Omega-3 with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, DHA may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Although some clinical evidence suggests that DHA might reduce collagen-stimulated platelet aggregation and thromboxane release, most clinical evidence suggests that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting. However, theoretically, when given in combination with EPA as fish oil, concomitant use with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (including aspirin) might increase risk of bleeding.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antidiabetes drugs might reduce the effects of these medications.
In people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking oral hypoglycemic medications, DHA seems to increase fasting blood glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Fish oils containing DHA can lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives; use with caution.
