Indole-3-carbinol is generally well tolerated in the doses studied, but side effects do occur. The most common are diarrhea (it increases how fast your gut moves), nausea, rash, tremor, and unsteadiness — and the balance and tremor issues seem to get worse at higher doses.

One adult taking 400 mg twice daily developed imbalance and tremor after 10 days; it resolved when the dose was cut in half. For pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data, and the supplement may have hormone effects, so it's not recommended.

For breastfeeding, safety hasn't been established, so concentrated supplements should be avoided. If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.
