HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Reishi Mushroom Complex by Swanson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients, both forms of reishi mushroom: a fruiting body extract and reishi itself. They're the same mushroom, just listed separately—one as a concentrated extract and one as the whole form.
The capsules also contain inactive ingredients (rice flour, hypromellose, maltodextrin, L-leucine, and silica) that help hold the capsule together and improve how it dissolves.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold doesn't support reishi for lowering cholesterol (hyperlipidemia)—it's rated possibly ineffective for that. For altitude sickness, Alzheimer disease, and athletic performance, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or doesn't.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Reishi mushroom is generally well tolerated when you take it short-term. Most people don't have problems, though some report dizziness, dry mouth, itching, nausea, rash, or stomach upset.
Respiratory allergies to reishi spores, sore throat, and runny nose can also occur. Rare side effects include insomnia and headache.
Long-term safety hasn't been well studied, so caution is warranted if you're thinking of using it long-term. Don't take this during pregnancy or while breastfeeding—there isn't enough safety data to know it's okay.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist if you take blood pressure medication, blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelets), or diabetes drugs before starting this product. All three have documented Moderate-severity interactions with reishi mushroom.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're looking to try reishi mushroom and you don't take blood pressure meds, blood thinners, or diabetes medication, this is generally well tolerated. If you're on any of those, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first—the interaction risk is real, especially at higher doses.
Even if you're not on those meds, mention it to your pharmacist so we can flag any other drugs you might be on.

Reishi Mushroom Complex by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson's Reishi Mushroom Complex contains reishi mushroom, which does interact with several medication types.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious concern is blood pressure medication (antihypertensive drugs). Reishi mushroom can lower blood pressure on its own, and combining it with your blood pressure meds might push your pressure too low.
Animal research shows this effect, and some patients taking reishi have experienced lower readings.
At higher doses—3 grams daily or more—reishi mushroom may also increase bleeding risk if you're on blood thinners (anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs). A lower dose of 1.5 grams daily doesn't seem to have this effect, but we need to know what you're taking.
Similarly, reishi mushroom might add to the blood-sugar-lowering effect of diabetes medications (antidiabetes drugs), though its effect on blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes is inconsistent in the research.
Altogether, these interactions span 372 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact drugs before you start.

Reishi Mushroom Fruiting Body Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, high doses of reishi mushroom might increase the risk of bleeding.
A dose of 1.5 grams daily of reishi mushroom does not seem to decrease platelet aggregation, but a higher dose of 3 grams daily does.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, reishi mushroom might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that reishi mushroom decreases blood sugar. However, in patients with type 2 diabetes, taking reishi mushroom does not reduce fasting glucose levels, and its effects on glycated hemoglobin are inconsistent.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, concurrent use of reishi mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Reishi mushroom has shown hypotensive activity in animal research. Clinical evidence suggests that reishi mushroom reduces blood pressure in some, but not all, patients with hypertension.
