Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Ramelteon (Rozerem) is a sleep aid that works on your melatonin receptors to help you nod off. Here's the thing about pairing it with 5-HTP: your body turns 5-HTP into serotonin, and serotonin is actually the raw material your brain uses to build melatonin. So both of these are nudging the same sleepy machinery, and on top of that 5-HTP itself has been linked to drowsiness in studies.

Stacked together, you could feel more sedated than expected, the next-morning grogginess, dizziness, or feeling foggy. Worth noting this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how these work rather than strong head-to-head data, so don't panic. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before combining them so they can keep an eye on how sleepy you get.

“Ramelteon (Rozerem) is a prescription sleep aid, and its 228 interacting supplements call for real care, starting with the nine rated major. The frustrating part is that the things sleepless people typically reach for, kava, CBD, a glass of wine before bed, sit at the heart of the problem.”
