Dexlansoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Baikal Skullcap interacts with.

Theoretically, Baikal skullcap might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19 enzymes.
In vitro evidence suggest that wogonin, a constituent of Baikal skullcap, modestly inhibits the activity of CYP2C19 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP2C19 to help clear dexlansoprazole (Dexilant) out of your system. Baikal skullcap contains a compound called wogonin that, in lab dishes, seems to mildly slow that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in people, dexlansoprazole could hang around a little longer and its effects (and side effects) could be slightly stronger. With this drug that might mean more headache, diarrhea, nausea, or stomach discomfort.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is only a test-tube finding, and it has not been seen in actual humans, so it's mostly theoretical and the worry is low. Dexlansoprazole also isn't a prodrug, so the direction would point toward a bit more effect, not less. Still, if you plan to use this herb, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up first.

What Is Dexlansoprazole Used For?

Brand name: Dexilant Solutab

Dexlansoprazole delayed-release capsules — sold as Dexilant and available as a generic — are used in patients 12 years of age and older to heal erosive esophagitis (EE), which is damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid. They are also used to keep that damage healed and relieve heartburn over time.

In addition, dexlansoprazole treats heartburn from non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) — that is, acid reflux that causes symptoms without visible damage to the esophagus. Both Dexilant and generic dexlansoprazole delayed-release capsules share these same approved uses.
