Theoretically, betony might have additive effects with blood pressure lowering drugs due to hypotensive activity of the glycosides found in betony. It might also interfere with the activity of pressor drugs. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the gist: losartan (Cozaar) already works to bring your blood pressure down, and betony may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. Put them together and those effects could add up, possibly nudging your numbers lower than intended. If that happens, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or a little woozy when you stand up quickly.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This concern is theoretical, based on how betony's plant compounds behave, not on solid human studies. For many people it may never cause a problem. Still, if you take losartan and want to try betony, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings at home.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
