Drug & supplement interaction

Breadfruit + Clofazimine

Clofazimine brand name: Lamprene.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Breadfruit and Clofazimine in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the label for Clofazimine states a food rule worth keeping to.

Breadfruit and Clofazimine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Clofazimine and Breadfruit in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Breadfruit safety at a glance

Breadfruit overall Use caution Breadfruit is safe as a food, but medicinal extracts and leaf teas are not well studied.
Pregnancy Use caution Eating the fruit as food is generally fine, but avoid concentrated medicinal extracts due to a lack of safety data.
Breastfeeding Use caution The fruit as food is likely fine, but medicinal preparations have not been studied, so caution is advised.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Clofazimine

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Clofazimine is filed under 3 classifications — antibiotic drugs, photosensitizing drugs, oral drugs. Breadfruit has documented interactions with 5 drug classes — the most serious being anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate), antihypertensive drugs (moderate) and cytochrome p450 2c8 (cyp2c8) substrates (moderate) — and none of Clofazimine’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Breadfruit Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Clofazimine. It is the side-effect record for Breadfruit on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Breadfruit, this list is the first place to look. One entry is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Breadfruit — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Clofazimine’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Clofazimine column appears here.

How to take them

Some Clofazimine Products Have a Food Rule — Breadfruit Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Clofazimine says to take it with food. If you take Breadfruit on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Clofazimine with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Clofazimine products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

2 DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION For dapsone-sensitive lepromatous leprosy, 100 mg (two 50 mg capsules) daily with meals as a part of a combination regimen for at least 2 years is recommended.

From the Dosage and Administration section of the FDA label we read for Clofazimine — where that label names a specific product, the instruction is that product's. See the Clofazimine drug page ›

A food rule is not an interaction — it is about how much of the medicine you absorb. The directions that came with your own product, and your pharmacist, outrank anything on this page.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Clofazimine

This page covers Breadfruit only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Clofazimine page lists 64 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Alfalfa (moderate), Angelica Archangelica (moderate), Arrach (moderate) and Bacillus Coagulans (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 52 moderate · 11 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clofazimine page

“Clofazimine (Lamprene) treats leprosy for months or years, so anything that quietly drains its blood levels deserves genuine caution. Activated charcoal is the single major-rated interaction among the 64 on file, binding the drug and cutting how much reaches your body.”

About Breadfruit

What is Breadfruit?

  • Source of nutrition and energy
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes and blood sugar support
  • Inflammation and joint discomfort
  • Skin conditions

Breadfruit is a starchy tropical fruit eaten as a staple food, and its leaves are used in traditional medicine for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. As a food it is nutritious and generally safe, but the medicinal use of leaf teas or extracts has very little human research to back it up. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using breadfruit products for a health condition.

Artocarpus altilis · Moraceae · Fruit, seeds, leaves, and sometimes the bark or latex · Whole fruit (food), flour, leaf tea, capsules, and powders

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Breadfruit is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Breadfruit record says about it on its own.

Breadfruit: dosing

There is no established standardized dose for breadfruit as a medicine. When eaten as a food, normal serving sizes are used the same way you would eat potatoes or other starchy vegetables. For supplements, leaf teas, or extracts, follow the directions on the product label, since the strength of products can vary widely.

About Clofazimine

What Is Clofazimine Used For?

Brand name: Lamprene

Lamprene (clofazimine) is used to treat lepromatous leprosy — the most severe form of leprosy — including cases where the bacteria have become resistant to dapsone. It is also used when leprosy is complicated by erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), a painful inflammatory reaction that can occur alongside the infection.

Lamprene is always used as part of a combination regimen with other anti-leprosy drugs. Using it alone for initial treatment raises the risk of drug resistance.
