Defibrotide Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. In vitro research shows that certain flavonoid constituents from breadfruit root extract can inhibit thromboxane formation and reduce platelet aggregation.
Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with breadfruit and defibrotide (Defitelio). Defibrotide already works to keep blood from clotting too easily, and some lab studies suggest certain flavonoids in breadfruit root extract can also reduce how well your platelets clump together. Stack those two effects and, in theory, you could tip toward easier bleeding or bruising.

I want to be honest about the strength of this. It's a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real patient cases. Also, defibrotide is a serious hospital medication given by IV to very ill transplant patients, so this isn't a casual at-home combo. Eating breadfruit as a normal food is very different from taking concentrated leaf teas or extracts. If you or a loved one is on defibrotide, let the care team know about any breadfruit supplements before using them.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
