Here's something worth clearing up. The interaction in our file is really about quinolone antibiotics (like ciprofloxacin), which can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 and cause caffeine to build up. But doripenem (Doribax) isn't a quinolone. It's a carbapenem, a different class entirely, and it doesn't block that caffeine-clearing enzyme the way quinolones do.

So in practice, I wouldn't expect your morning coffee to clash with doripenem. Keep in mind doripenem is given as an IV in the hospital for serious infections, so you're under close watch anyway. If you ever feel jittery, have a racing heart, or can't sleep, mention it to your nurse or pharmacist, but this particular pairing isn't one I'd lose sleep over.

What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Doribax

  • Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
