Caffeine + Ethinyl Estradiol
Ethinyl Estradiol brand name: Estinyl.
Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 2 drug categories that Caffeine can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, estrogens might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Caffeine interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Caffeine in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ESTROGENS
1 of 2Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol
Ethinyl Estradiol falls under ESTROGENS — the group Caffeine interacts with.
Estrogen inhibits caffeine metabolism.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here the direction goes the other way from what people often expect. It isn't that caffeine changes your ethinyl estradiol (the estrogen in many birth control and hormone pills). Instead, the estrogen slows down the liver enzyme that clears caffeine, so caffeine can hang around longer in your body and build up a bit more than usual.
In plain terms, your usual coffee, tea, or energy drink may hit harder. You might notice more jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling anxious or shaky. This is considered a probable but fairly mild effect. If you feel wired or sleepless, simply easing back on caffeine usually helps. Chat with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS
2 of 2Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS.
Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the rate of caffeine clearance and increase caffeine levels.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here the direction is the opposite of what most people expect. It's not that your birth control (or estrogen) changes how caffeine works on you. Instead, ethinyl estradiol can gently slow down the liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that clears caffeine from your body. With that cleanup running a little slower, caffeine can hang around longer and build up.
In plain terms, your usual coffee or tea might hit a bit harder. You may notice more jitteriness, a faster or pounding heartbeat, or trouble sleeping. This is only a theoretical, minor concern based on lab data, not strong human studies, so for most people it's nothing dramatic. If you feel wired or can't sleep, simply easing back on caffeine usually does the trick. Chat with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethinyl Estradiol page
“Ethinyl estradiol (Estinyl) is the estrogen in many birth control pills, and I treat its supplement list with real care, because the stake is not just side effects but whether the pill keeps working. Three of its 211 interacting ingredients are rated major, and those come first: St.”

About Caffeine
What is Caffeine?
- Mental alertness and reducing fatigue
- Improving athletic performance
- Headache and migraine relief
- Boosting focus and concentration
- Weight loss aid
Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in coffee, tea, and many other plants and products. In moderate amounts it can boost alertness and reduce tiredness for most healthy adults, but too much can cause jitteriness, a racing heart, and sleep problems. Pregnant women and people with heart conditions or anxiety should be especially careful and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
