Caffeine + Gemifloxacin
Gemifloxacin brand name: Factive.
Caffeine has a moderate interaction with Gemifloxacin. Theoretically, quinolone antibiotics might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
Why this applies to Gemifloxacin
Gemifloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Caffeine interacts with.
Quinolones (also called fluoroquinolones) can decrease caffeine clearance by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to know if you're sipping coffee, tea, or energy drinks while on gemifloxacin (Factive): the antibiotic can slow down the liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that normally breaks down caffeine. With that enzyme working slower, caffeine hangs around in your body longer than usual. Gemifloxacin itself isn't affected here, and it's not a prodrug, so its ability to fight your infection stays the same.
What you might actually notice is more of caffeine's usual effects: feeling jittery, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach. The good news is this is fairly easy to manage by simply easing up on caffeine while you're on the antibiotic. If you feel wired or your heart's racing, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Caffeine
What is Caffeine?
- Mental alertness and reducing fatigue
- Improving athletic performance
- Headache and migraine relief
- Boosting focus and concentration
- Weight loss aid
Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in coffee, tea, and many other plants and products. In moderate amounts it can boost alertness and reduce tiredness for most healthy adults, but too much can cause jitteriness, a racing heart, and sleep problems. Pregnant women and people with heart conditions or anxiety should be especially careful and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
About Gemifloxacin
What Is Gemifloxacin Used For?
Brand name: Factive
-
Gemifloxacin is used to treat pneumonia. Gemifloxacin may also be used to treat bronchitis but should not be used for this condition if there are other treatment options. Gemifloxacin is in a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. It works by killing bacteria that cause infections.
-
Antibiotics such as gemifloxacin do not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
