Triazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Cascara Sagrada interacts with.

Theoretically, cascara sagrada might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that cascara sagrada can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.

Here's the gist for Halcion (triazolam): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this sleep medicine down. Lab studies suggest cascara sagrada may gently nudge that enzyme to work a little faster. If that happens in real life, your triazolam could clear out sooner, which might make it less effective, so you may not fall asleep as easily or stay asleep as long.

Honestly, this is a weak, theoretical concern. The evidence comes only from test-tube research, and the effect was far smaller than known strong inducers. Brief, occasional laxative use is unlikely to throw off your sleep meds. Still, if you plan to use cascara, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how well your triazolam is working.

Cascara sagrada is a stimulant laxative made from the aged bark of a Pacific Northwest tree, used mainly for short-term relief of constipation. Because it can cause cramping, dehydration, and electrolyte problems—and was removed from over-the-counter laxative products in the U.S. due to safety concerns—it should only be used briefly, if at all, and with guidance from a pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Triazolam Used For?

Triazolam tablets are approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults. Treatment is generally intended for 7 to 10 days. Halcion (a brand of triazolam) is specifically indicated for this same short-term use in adults.

Using triazolam for more than 2 to 3 weeks requires a full re-evaluation by your doctor to rule out an underlying medical or psychiatric condition driving the sleep problem.
