Simeprevir Sodium falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorophyllin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyllin with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyllin is a semi-synthetic derivative of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. Orally, chlorophyll has also been associated with the development of pseudoporphyria in multiple case reports.

Here's the connection to keep in mind: simeprevir (Olysio) is already known to make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. That's a well-documented side effect of this hepatitis C medicine, with reports of sunburn, redness, and rashes from sun or tanning beds. Chlorophyllin, on its own, has also been linked to sun sensitivity in some reports. So putting the two together could, in theory, add up and make your skin react more easily to the sun.

This is mostly a theoretical concern, not something proven in head-to-head studies, so try not to panic. While you're on simeprevir, it's smart to use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit strong sun anyway. If you're thinking about adding chlorophyllin, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
