These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Corydalis Yanhusuo interacts with whole categories of medication. Chlorpheniramine Polistirex, Codeine Polistirex falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Corydalis Yanhusuo in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 3Why this applies to Chlorpheniramine Polistirex, Codeine Polistirex
Chlorpheniramine Polistirex, Codeine Polistirex falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Corydalis Yanhusuo interacts with.
Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. Animal research suggests that berberine may have sedative effects. Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might also have CNS depressants effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version. Tuzistra XR combines codeine (an opioid) with chlorpheniramine (a sedating antihistamine), so this medicine already tends to make people drowsy, foggy, and slow to react. Corydalis yanhusuo may have its own calming, sedative-like effects on the brain. Put the two together and those drowsy effects could stack up, leaving you more sleepy, dizzy, or unsteady than usual. In larger doses, opioids can also slow your breathing, so adding anything sedating is worth taking seriously.
That said, this is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab and animal research, not strong human studies. Still, I'd rather you be cautious. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, and don't drive until you know how the combination affects you.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Chlorpheniramine Polistirex, Codeine Polistirex also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.
Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might also inhibit CYP2D6.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's a wrinkle with this one. The codeine in Tuzistra XR is actually a prodrug, meaning your body has to convert it into morphine using an enzyme called CYP2D6 before you get much pain or cough relief. Corydalis contains berberine, which lab studies suggest may slow that same enzyme down. So in theory, less codeine would turn into morphine, and you might get weaker relief than expected.
On the flip side, the chlorpheniramine half is also handled by CYP2D6, so its levels could creep up, possibly adding to drowsiness, dry mouth, or dizziness. Honestly, this is theoretical and based on lab data, not strong human studies, so don't panic. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Chlorpheniramine Polistirex, Codeine Polistirex also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might also inhibit CYP3A4.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Tuzistra XR pairs codeine with the antihistamine chlorpheniramine. The concern here is mostly theoretical: lab studies hint that compounds in Corydalis yanhusuo (like berberine) may slow down the CYP3A4 enzyme. Since both ingredients in this cough syrup are partly cleared by that pathway, blocking it could let their levels drift a little higher than usual.
In real life that might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing from the codeine, plus extra grogginess and dry mouth from the chlorpheniramine. This is based on test-tube data, not solid human studies, so the risk is uncertain. Still, because codeine and sedation are involved, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than guessing.

Corydalis yanhusuo is a traditional Chinese herb used mainly for pain.
