Corydalis Yanhusuo and Hydrochlorothiazide, Triamterene

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide, Triamterene

Hydrochlorothiazide, Triamterene falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Corydalis Yanhusuo interacts with.

Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. Animal research suggests that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, a clinical study suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might also reduce blood pressure.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your combination pill, Maxzide or Dyazide (hydrochlorothiazide with triamterene), lowers blood pressure by helping your body shed extra fluid and salt. Corydalis yanhusuo may have its own mild blood-pressure-lowering effect, partly from a compound called berberine. So putting the two together could nudge your blood pressure down a little more than you expect. This isn't about one breaking down the other, it's just two things pulling in the same direction.

If your pressure drops too far, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, or tired, especially when standing up. I'll be honest though: this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how these ingredients behave, not from strong human studies. Before adding Corydalis, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Hydrochlorothiazide, Triamterene page

“Hydrochlorothiazide with triamterene (Dyazide, Maxzide) does two delicate jobs at once, pulling fluid off the body while holding on to potassium, and that is exactly where most of these supplements press. The great majority either add to its blood-pressure-lowering and diuretic effects, tipping people toward dizziness and unbalanced po…”
