Corydalis Yanhusuo and Rosiglitazone Maleate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Corydalis Yanhusuo interacts with whole categories of medication. Rosiglitazone Maleate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Corydalis Yanhusuo in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Rosiglitazone Maleate

Rosiglitazone Maleate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Corydalis Yanhusuo interacts with.

Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. Preliminary clinical research shows that berberine can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might also inhibit CYP2C9.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to clear rosiglitazone (Avandia). Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine, which lab and early human research suggests can slow that same enzyme down. If that happens, rosiglitazone could linger longer than usual and build up a bit, which means a stronger blood-sugar-lowering effect than you planned on.

In real life, that might show up as low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion), and possibly more of rosiglitazone's usual side effects like fluid retention or swelling. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not proven harm in people. Still, since you're managing diabetes, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and keep an eye on your sugars.

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Rosiglitazone Maleate also falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS.

Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. Clinical research shows that berberine may lower blood glucose levels. Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might also lower blood glucose levels.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Your rosiglitazone (Avandia) works to bring your blood sugar down by making your body more sensitive to insulin. Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine, a compound that may also nudge blood sugar lower. Put the two together and, in theory, your numbers could dip lower than expected, raising the chance of hypoglycemia.

If that happens, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, hungry, or have a pounding heart. I want to be honest with you though: this concern is theoretical, based on how the herb behaves, not on strong human studies pairing the two. Still, it's worth a heads-up to your pharmacist or doctor before adding Corydalis, and keep checking your sugars if you do. Don't change your Avandia dose on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rosiglitazone Maleate page

“Rosiglitazone (Avandia) lowers blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, and most of the 314 supplements and herbs on this page pull on that same lever. Some 239 can move blood glucose on their own, so adding one risks hypoglycemia, the shakiness, sweating, and confusion of sugar falling too low.”

  • Stomach and abdominal discomfort

Corydalis yanhusuo is a traditional Chinese herb used mainly for pain. About Rosiglitazone

What Is Rosiglitazone Used For?

Brand name: Avandia

  • Rosiglitazone is used along with a diet and exercise program and sometimes with one or more other medications to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Rosiglitazone is in a class of medications called thiazolidinediones. It works by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin, a natural substance that helps control blood sugar levels. Rosiglitazone is not used to treat type 1 diabetes (condition in which the body does not produce insulin and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood) or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious condition that may occur if high blood sugar is not treated).

  • Over time, people who have diabetes and high blood sugar can develop serious or life-threatening complications, including heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, nerve damage, and eye problems. Taking medication(s), making lifestyle changes (e.g., diet, exercise, quitting smoking), and regularly checking your blood sugar may help to manage your diabetes and improve your health. This therapy may also decrease your chances of having a heart attack, stroke, or other diabetes-related complications such as kidney failure, nerve damage (numb, cold legs or feet; decreased sexual ability in men and women), eye problems, including changes or loss of vision, or gum disease. Your doctor and other healthcare providers will talk to you about the best way to manage your diabetes.
