Here's the idea behind this one. Elderberry seems to nudge the immune system to be more active, bumping up signals like certain cytokines. Palbociclib (Ibrance), on the other hand, is a targeted cancer medicine that works partly by slowing down cell growth and can lower your immune cell counts. So in theory, an immune-stimulating herb could work against the goal of your therapy or muddy the picture a bit.

I want to be honest: this is mostly a theoretical concern, not something proven in people taking Ibrance. Still, because this is serious cancer treatment, I wouldn't add elderberry on your own. Please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first. Small amounts in foods are unlikely to be the issue; it's concentrated daily supplements I'd want them to weigh in on.

Elderberry is a popular herbal supplement, mainly taken to help with colds and flu. Some small studies suggest it may modestly shorten cold or flu symptoms, but the evidence is limited and not conclusive. Cooked berries and properly prepared products are generally well tolerated, but raw or unripe parts can cause nausea and should be avoided.

About Palbociclib

What Is Palbociclib Used For?

Brand name: Ibrance

Palbociclib (brand name Ibrance) is used to treat adults with hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer. It is always given in combination with other medicines — either an aromatase inhibitor as a first hormonal treatment, or with fulvestrant after the cancer has progressed on prior hormonal therapy. It is also used with inavolisib and fulvestrant for a specific subtype (PIK3CA-mutated, endocrine-resistant) of this cancer confirmed by an FDA-authorized test.

Ibrance is also approved in combination with trastuzumab (with or without pertuzumab) and endocrine therapy for maintenance treatment of adults with HR-positive, HER2-positive locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer, following initial induction treatment.
