Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Byvalson, which combines nebivolol (a beta-blocker) with valsartan (a blood pressure medicine). Lab studies suggest a compound in evening primrose oil may gently slow down CYP2C9, one of the liver enzymes involved in clearing certain medications. If that happened in real life, a bit more drug could linger in your system, which could nudge your blood pressure lower or make side effects like dizziness, tiredness, or a slower heartbeat a touch more noticeable.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube data, not real patients, and it's rated minor. Neither of these drugs is a prodrug, so the direction is simply a possible mild increase in effect. Still, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before adding evening primrose.

  • Diabetic nerve pain

Evening primrose oil is a seed oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid, that is popularly used for skin conditions, PMS, and breast pain. The evidence behind most of these uses is mixed or weak, and it is not proven to be a reliable treatment for any condition. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant or have a bleeding disorder.
