Drug & supplement interaction

Eyebright + Sumatriptan

Sumatriptan brand name: Tosymra.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Eyebright and Sumatriptan in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Eyebright and Sumatriptan

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Sumatriptan and Eyebright in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Eyebright safety at a glance

Eyebright overall Use caution Likely safe in small amounts as a tea, but using homemade or non-sterile preparations directly in the eye is risky.
Pregnancy Avoid Safety has not been established, so it is best avoided during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Avoid There is not enough safety information, so avoid use while breastfeeding.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Sumatriptan

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Sumatriptan is filed under 4 classifications — including qt interval-prolonging drugs, serotonergic drugs, serotonergic drugs. Eyebright has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate) — and none of Sumatriptan’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Eyebright and Sumatriptan May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sumatriptan page

“The supplement risk that matters most with sumatriptan (Tosymra) is serotonin overload. This migraine drug works through serotonin receptors, and 20 of the 50 interacting ingredients on file, 5-HTP among them, can push serotonin activity higher still, raising the risk of serotonin syndrome (agitation, racing heart, fever).”

About Eyebright

What is Eyebright?

Eyebright
  • Eye irritation and redness
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Eye strain
  • Allergy and cold-related eye symptoms
  • Nasal congestion and hay fever

Eyebright is a traditional herb long used for minor eye irritation, redness, and allergy symptoms, but high-quality human studies are very limited. There is not enough reliable evidence to confirm it works, and using non-sterile herbal preparations in the eye carries a real risk of infection, so talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it.

Euphrasia officinalis · Orobanchaceae · Aerial parts (leaves, stems, and flowers) · Tea, eye drops, tincture, capsules, homeopathic preparations, compresses

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Eyebright is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Eyebright record says about it on its own.

Eyebright: dosing

There is no standardized or well-established dose for eyebright. Traditional use as a tea typically involves steeping the dried herb in hot water, but amounts vary widely between products and sources. If you choose to use a commercial eyebright product, follow the directions on the label and choose products from reputable manufacturers. For anything used in or near the eye, only use products that are specifically made and labeled as sterile eye preparations.

About Sumatriptan

What Is Sumatriptan Used For?

Brand name: Tosymra

Sumatriptan treats acute migraine attacks — with or without aura — in adults. It is available as tablets, nasal spray, nasal capsule, and subcutaneous injection, and is used to stop a migraine once it has started, not to prevent future attacks.

The subcutaneous injection forms — including Imitrex injection, Sumatriptan injection, and Sumatriptan Succinate injection — are also approved to treat acute cluster headache in adults. Zembrace SymTouch (subcutaneous injection) is approved for acute migraine only. Tablets and nasal forms are not established for cluster headache.
