Here's the piece to pay attention to in your combination cold product: the dextromethorphan. Beyond quieting a cough, it gently nudges serotonin activity in the brain. Fermented wheat germ extract, in animal studies, also raised brain serotonin levels. Stack the two and, in theory, you could push serotonin a little too high.

If that happened, you might feel jittery, shaky, sweaty, restless, or unusually warm, with a racing heart or maybe some nausea. I'll be honest though, this concern comes only from lab and animal research, not real-world cases, so it's more of a caution than a red alert. The phenylephrine and methscopolamine pieces aren't the issue here. If you take both, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up first.
