SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to nefazodone
nefazodone falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Wheat Germ Extract interacts with.
Animal research shows that fermented wheat germ can increase levels of serotonin in the brain.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: nefazodone (Serzone) lifts your mood by boosting serotonin activity in the brain. Fermented wheat germ extract has been shown, in animal studies only, to nudge brain serotonin levels up too. Stack the two together and the concern is that you could get a bit too much serotonin at once.
Now, I want to be honest about how weak this signal is. This comes from lab and animal work, not from people taking both, so it's a theoretical worry. Still, if you ever notice things like restlessness, shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or stomach upset, those can be early signs of too much serotonin. Don't change anything on your own. Just give your pharmacist or oncologist a heads-up before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the nefazodone page
“Nefazodone (Serzone) treats depression by working on serotonin, and it also strongly blocks a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is exactly why this list deserves your close attention. The largest group, 121 ingredients, are ones nefazodone can push to higher levels because it slows their breakdown.”

About Fermented Wheat Germ Extract
What is Fermented Wheat Germ Extract?
- Cancer supportive care (as a complementary product)
- Immune support
- General wellness during cancer treatment
- Antioxidant support
- Fatigue during illness
Fermented wheat germ extract is a supplement made by fermenting wheat germ with yeast, and it is most often marketed for people going through cancer treatment. While some early research and a few small studies are interesting, the overall evidence is limited and far from conclusive, so it should never replace standard medical care. Talk with your oncologist or pharmacist before using it, since it is a supplement and not an approved treatment.
About Nefazodone
What Is Nefazodone Used For?
Brand name: Serzone
Nefazodone Hydrochloride tablets are approved to treat depression, specifically major depressive disorder (MDD). Clinical trials established its effectiveness over 6 to 8 weeks in outpatients and 6 weeks in hospitalized patients with depression.
Nefazodone has also been shown to help prevent depression from coming back in patients who responded well to initial treatment. Because of a serious risk of liver failure, prescribers are advised to consider other antidepressants before turning to nefazodone.
