Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Fever Bark interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and clinical effects of yohimbine, a constituent of fever bark.
In vitro and clinical research shows that the fever bark constituent, yohimbine, is metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes.

Here's the gist with Technivie (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir): the ritonavir piece is a strong blocker of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Fever bark contains a compound called yohimbine, and your body relies on that same CYP3A4 enzyme to break yohimbine down. When ritonavir slows that enzyme, yohimbine can build up and hang around longer than usual.

In practice that means stronger yohimbine effects, like a racing heart, jitteriness, anxiety, higher blood pressure, or trouble sleeping. This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs behave, not from real-world reports, so don't panic. Still, fever bark is an unpredictable herb, and I'd skip it while on Technivie. Please run any supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

There is very little reliable human research to support these uses, and the bark contains potent alkaloids that may cause serious side effects. What Is Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir Used For?

Brand name: Technivie

  • The combination of ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir is usually used in combination with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol), but sometimes it is used alone to treat a certain type of chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus). Ombitasvir is a hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5A inhibitor. It works by stopping the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body. Paritaprevir is a protease inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of HCV in the body. Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor. It helps to increase the amount of paritaprevir in the body so that the medication will have a greater effect. It is not known if ombitasvir, paritaprevir, or ritonavir prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
