Simeprevir Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Fever Bark interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and clinical effects of yohimbine, a constituent of fever bark.
In vitro and clinical research shows that the fever bark constituent, yohimbine, is metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes.

Here's the twist with this pairing: the worry isn't really about your hepatitis C medicine, it's about the fever bark. Simeprevir (Olysio) can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and one of fever bark's active compounds, a yohimbine-like alkaloid, is normally cleared by that same enzyme. So in theory, simeprevir could let those alkaloids build up in your body.

If that happened, you might feel yohimbine's effects more strongly: a faster heartbeat, jitteriness, anxiety, or a rise in blood pressure. I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how the chemicals behave, not something proven in people. Still, fever bark carries potent alkaloids with little safety research, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Fever bark is the bark of the Australian tree Alstonia constricta, used in traditional medicine for fever, diarrhea, and infections. There is very little reliable human research to support these uses, and the bark contains potent alkaloids that may cause serious side effects. What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
