Goji + Lapatinib
Lapatinib brand name: Tykerb.
Goji has a moderate interaction with Lapatinib. Theoretically, goji berry might inhibit CYP3A4 and reduce metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Lapatinib
Lapatinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goji interacts with.
In vitro research shows that goji berry juice inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Concomitant use with goji may decrease metabolism and increase levels of CYP3A4 substrates. However, this has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for Lapatinib (Tykerb): your liver relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medicine down. Lab studies suggest goji berry juice may slow that same enzyme. If it does, lapatinib could clear from your body a little more slowly and build up higher than expected.
For lapatinib, higher levels can mean more of its usual side effects, things like diarrhea, nausea, rash, hand-foot skin reactions, or in rare cases heart or liver strain. The important thing to know is that this is theoretical, based only on test-tube research, and hasn't been seen in real patients. Eating goji as a food is unlikely to be a problem, but concentrated supplements or juices are worth running past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Lapatinib page
“Of the 143 supplements on file for lapatinib (Tykerb), nearly all press on the same point, the CYP3A4 enzyme that clears this HER2-targeted breast cancer drug. That deserves real caution, since lapatinib only works when its blood level stays in range.”

About Goji
What is Goji?
- General antioxidant support
- Eye health
- Immune support
- Anti-aging and well-being
- Blood sugar support
Goji berries are a nutritious fruit rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and plant polysaccharides, and they are safe for most people as a food. About Lapatinib
What Is Lapatinib Used For?
Brand name: Tykerb
Lapatinib tablets are used in combination with other medicines to treat certain types of advanced or metastatic breast cancer in patients whose tumors overexpress HER2 (a protein that drives tumor growth). It is not used alone.
Specifically, lapatinib tablets are used with capecitabine for HER2-positive advanced or metastatic breast cancer in patients who have already received prior therapy (including certain chemotherapy drugs and trastuzumab). Lapatinib tablets are also used with letrozole for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer when hormonal therapy is appropriate. Tykerb is the brand name product with these same indicated uses.
