Goji + Voriconazole
Voriconazole brand name: Vfend.
Voriconazole falls into 3 drug categories that Goji can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, goji berry might inhibit CYP2C19 and reduce metabolism of CYP2C19 substrates.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Goji interacts with whole categories of medication. Voriconazole falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Goji in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES
1 of 3Why this applies to Voriconazole
Voriconazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Goji interacts with.
In vitro research shows that goji berry tincture and juice inhibit CYP2C19 enzymes. Concomitant use with goji may decrease metabolism and increase levels of CYP2C19 substrates. However, this has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for voriconazole (Vfend). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 to clear this antifungal out of your system. Lab studies hint that goji (as a tincture or juice) may slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in a person, voriconazole could build up a bit and reach higher levels than expected. Voriconazole isn't a prodrug, so more drug hanging around means a stronger effect and a higher chance of side effects like visual changes (blurry vision, light sensitivity), nausea, or liver irritation.
The honest part: this is theoretical, seen only in test-tube work and never confirmed in humans, so the real-world risk looks small. A few goji berries in your diet almost certainly won't matter. Still, voriconazole is a sensitive drug with tight blood-level targets, so before starting a concentrated goji supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Voriconazole also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that goji berry tincture and juice inhibit CYP2C9 enzymes. Additionally, multiple case reports suggest that goji berry concentrated tea and juice inhibit the metabolism of warfarin, a CYP2C9 substrate. Concomitant use with goji may decrease metabolism and increase levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for voriconazole (Vfend). Your body clears this antifungal partly through a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Goji berry may slow that enzyme down, at least based on lab studies and a handful of case reports involving warfarin. If goji blocks the enzyme, voriconazole could clear more slowly and build up in your blood, which can mean more side effects like blurry or altered vision, nausea, headache, dizziness, or liver irritation.
I'll be honest: this is mostly theoretical, and eating a few goji berries in a meal is unlikely to be a problem. Concentrated goji juice, tea, or supplements are where I'd be more cautious. Since voriconazole levels really do matter for safety, please run any goji supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Voriconazole also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that goji berry juice inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Concomitant use with goji may decrease metabolism and increase levels of CYP3A4 substrates. However, this has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with goji and your voriconazole (Vfend). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear voriconazole from your body. Lab studies suggest goji may slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let voriconazole build up a bit higher than expected, which might mean more of its usual side effects like visual changes (blurry vision or seeing brightness), nausea, headache, or higher liver enzymes.
I want to be honest, though: this has only been seen in test-tube research, never in actual patients, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Eating goji berries as a food is unlikely to matter much. If you're thinking about concentrated goji supplements or goji juice, just run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Goji
What is Goji?
- General antioxidant support
- Eye health
- Immune support
- Anti-aging and well-being
- Blood sugar support
Goji berries are a nutritious fruit rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and plant polysaccharides, and they are safe for most people as a food. While they are popular for eye health, immune support, and general wellness, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated goji supplements, especially if you take medications or are pregnant.
About Voriconazole
What Is Voriconazole Used For?
Brand name: Vfend
Voriconazole treats several serious fungal infections. Across all available forms — tablets, oral suspension, and intravenous (IV) injection — it is used for invasive aspergillosis (a dangerous mold infection), candidemia (Candida fungus in the bloodstream) in patients who are not neutropenic (not severely low on white blood cells), other deep-tissue Candida infections, and serious infections caused by Scedosporium apiospermum or Fusarium species in patients who cannot tolerate or have not responded to other antifungal treatments.
Esophageal candidiasis (a Candida infection of the esophagus, the swallowing tube) is also an approved use for most formulations. Note on the oral tablet form (generic voriconazole tablets): that specific tablet formulation is approved for patients aged 12 to 14 years weighing at least 50 kg, and all patients 15 years and older — not for younger or smaller children. The oral suspension and the IV injection are approved for patients 2 years and older for most of these conditions.
