Here's the concern with pairing baricitinib (Olumiant) and green tea. This isn't about one changing how the other is broken down. It's simply that both can occasionally be hard on the liver. Baricitinib already carries a small risk of raising liver enzymes, and concentrated green tea extract supplements have rarely been tied to liver injury too. Stacking two things that lean on the liver could, in theory, add up.

I'll be honest though, this is mostly theoretical and based on scattered case reports, so it's unlikely to cause trouble for most folks. Drinking green tea as a beverage is a non-issue here. It's the high-dose extract capsules I'd be cautious with. Your doctor usually checks liver labs on baricitinib anyway, so just loop in your pharmacist before adding a supplement.

About Baricitinib

What Is Baricitinib Used For?

Brand name: Olumiant

Olumiant (baricitinib) tablets are approved for three conditions in adults. It treats moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis in people who haven't responded well enough to one or more TNF blocker medications. It also treats severe alopecia areata (significant hair loss from an autoimmune condition).

Olumiant is additionally approved to treat COVID-19 in hospitalized adults who need supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, or ECMO (a machine that does the work of the heart and lungs). Each use has specific limitations — for example, Olumiant should not be combined with other JAK inhibitors or certain strong immunosuppressants for rheumatoid arthritis or alopecia areata.
