Here's the simple version: both bortezomib (Velcade) and concentrated green tea extract can, on rare occasions, be hard on the liver. The worry is that stacking them together might add up and put a little extra stress on that organ. Your cancer team already watches your liver closely with blood tests while you're on bortezomib, so this is more of a 'be aware' note than a red alert.

I'll be honest with you, this concern is mostly theoretical and based on scattered case reports, not strong studies. Drinking green tea as a normal beverage is very unlikely to be a problem. It's the high-dose green tea extract pills that have been tied to liver injury. Before adding any green tea supplement, run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

Theoretically, green tea might interfere with the effects of bortezomib.
In vitro research shows that green tea polyphenols, such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), interact with bortezomib and block its proteasome inhibitory action. This prevents the induction of cell death in multiple myeloma or glioblastoma cancer cell lines. Advise patients taking bortezomib, not to take green tea.

Here's the concern with Velcade (bortezomib): this drug fights cancer by blocking something inside cells called the proteasome. In lab studies (test tubes and cell lines, not people), the green tea antioxidant EGCG actually latched onto bortezomib and blocked that action. In plain terms, the green tea compound could work against the very thing the medicine is trying to do, meaning the cancer cells might not be killed as well.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this comes from lab research only, so we can't say for sure how much it matters in real life. Still, because bortezomib treats serious cancers, it's not worth the gamble. Please skip green tea and green tea extracts while on this medicine, and check with your oncology team or pharmacist first.

Bortezomib is used to treat two types of cancer in adults: multiple myeloma (a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow) and mantle cell lymphoma (a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma). These indications are shared across the available products — Velcade, Boruzu, and generic bortezomib formulations.
