Green Tea + Clinafloxacin
Clinafloxacin brand name: Clinafloxacin.
Clinafloxacin falls into 2 drug categories that Green Tea can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, green tea might reduce the absorption of organic anion-transporting polypeptide (OATP) substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Green Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. Clinafloxacin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Tea in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP)
1 of 2Why this applies to Clinafloxacin
Clinafloxacin falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP) — the group Green Tea interacts with.
OATPs are expressed in the small intestine and liver and are responsible for the uptake of drugs and other compounds. Research shows that two of the major catechins found in green tea, epicatechin gallate (ECG) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), inhibit OATPs, specifically OATP1A2, OATP1B1, and OATP2B1. In addition, green tea has been shown to reduce the absorption of some drugs that are OATP substrates, including lisinopril, and celiprolol.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist for clinafloxacin, an antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone family. Green tea contains catechins (mainly ECG and EGCG) that can block transporters in your gut called OATPs, the same little doorways that help carry certain drugs into your body. If those doorways are slowed, less of the antibiotic may get absorbed. Clinafloxacin is not a prodrug, so less absorption simply means less drug working against your infection, which is the last thing you want when you're trying to clear a bug.
One important caveat: this concern comes from lab and animal data, not solid human studies, so it's more theoretical than proven. Still, to be safe, separate your green tea from your dose and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
2 of 2Clinafloxacin also falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS.
Green tea contains caffeine. Quinolones (also called fluoroquinolones) can decrease caffeine clearance by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the twist with this pairing: it's not your antibiotic that gets affected, it's the caffeine in green tea. Clinafloxacin, like other fluoroquinolone antibiotics, can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the main pathway your body uses to clear caffeine. When that pathway slows, caffeine sticks around longer and can stack up.
In real terms, that means the cup of green tea you'd normally tolerate fine might hit harder while you're on this antibiotic. Think jitters, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge. A regular cup or two is usually no big deal, but concentrated green tea extracts or lots of caffeine could amplify this. If you notice these symptoms, ease up on the caffeine and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clinafloxacin page
“If you have been prescribed clinafloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic, start with the four interactions rated major, because they all do the same thing: apple, grapefruit, and orange juice, along with activated charcoal, can sharply cut how much of the drug you absorb, and an antibiotic that never reaches your bloodstream cannot clear the…”

About Green Tea
What is Green Tea?
- Antioxidant support
- Weight loss
- Heart health
- Mental alertness
- Cancer risk reduction
Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
