Theoretically, quinolone antibiotics might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Green tea contains caffeine. Quinolones (also called fluoroquinolones) can decrease caffeine clearance by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.

Here's an important wrinkle: the interaction on file is built around quinolone antibiotics, which block an enzyme (CYP1A2) that clears caffeine. Doripenem isn't a quinolone, though. It's a carbapenem antibiotic given by IV, and it doesn't get cleared by your liver the same way. It's mostly removed by your kidneys, so it doesn't really have a meaningful tug-of-war with the caffeine in green tea.

In plain terms, drinking your usual cup of green tea while getting doripenem shouldn't make either one act differently. The caffeine concern that applies to drugs like ciprofloxacin just doesn't carry over here. If you're unsure or are using concentrated green tea extracts, it's always smart to run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?

  • Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
