Green Tea + Fluticasone, Salmeterol
Fluticasone, Salmeterol brand name: Advair Diskus.
Fluticasone, Salmeterol falls into 2 drug categories that Green Tea can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Green tea contains caffeine. Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of caffeine might increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Green Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. Fluticasone, Salmeterol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Tea in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Fluticasone, Salmeterol
Fluticasone, Salmeterol falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS — the group Green Tea interacts with.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version for Advair. The salmeterol part is a long-acting beta-agonist, and green tea naturally contains caffeine. Both can rev up the heart a little. So in theory, pairing a lot of caffeine with salmeterol might add to its heart-stimulating effects, meaning you could notice things like a faster heartbeat, a fluttery or pounding sensation, jitteriness, or feeling shaky.
Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds work, not something proven to cause real trouble. A normal cup or two of green tea is very unlikely to matter. The bigger flag would be concentrated green tea extract pills or chugging large amounts. If you feel extra jittery or your heart races, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Fluticasone, Salmeterol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro and in vivo research suggests that green tea can inhibit intestinal CYP3A and induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzymes. However, this effect is unlikely to be clinically significant, as green tea does not appear to affect CYP3A4 activity in humans.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Good news here: if you enjoy green tea while using your Advair Diskus, you really don't need to worry. Both of the active ingredients (fluticasone and salmeterol) are partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Green tea can nudge that enzyme a little in lab tests, but in actual people it doesn't seem to change how these medicines behave.
In theory, if anything slowed fluticasone's breakdown, you might see more steroid-type effects (like throat irritation, hoarseness, or mouth thrush), and with salmeterol possibly a faster heartbeat or jitteriness. But the evidence here is weak (lab and animal data only), and normal tea drinking is considered safe. If you take concentrated green tea extract pills, just mention it to your pharmacist.

About Green Tea
What is Green Tea?
- Antioxidant support
- Weight loss
- Heart health
- Mental alertness
- Cancer risk reduction
Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
