Green Tea and Glipizide, Metformin

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Green Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. Glipizide, Metformin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Tea in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Glipizide, Metformin

Glipizide, Metformin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Green Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, taking green tea with antidiabetes drugs might interfere with blood glucose control.
Concomitant use of green tea and antidiabetes drugs might interfere with blood glucose control. The data are conflicting. Reports claim that green tea and/or caffeine, a constituent of green tea, might increase or decrease blood sugar.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence B

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Metaglip combines two diabetes medicines: glipizide, which nudges your body to release more insulin, and metformin, which lowers the sugar your liver makes. The concern here isn't about green tea blocking or speeding up how these drugs are cleared. Instead, the thought is that green tea (and its caffeine) might gently shift your blood sugar on its own, in either direction depending on the study.

To be honest, this is a weak, theoretical interaction, and the evidence is genuinely mixed. A cup or two of green tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. With concentrated green tea extract supplements, it's a smarter idea to keep an eye on your readings. If you notice signs of low sugar (shakiness, sweating, dizziness) or unusually high numbers, check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Theoretically, metformin might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Green tea contains caffeine. Animal research suggests that metformin can reduce caffeine metabolism. Theoretically, concomitant use can increase caffeine serum concentrations and the risk of caffeine adverse effects.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the interesting twist with this one: it isn't your green tea changing how your medication works. It's the other way around. The metformin part of your Metaglip may slow down how your body clears the caffeine that's naturally in green tea. So the caffeine could hang around a little longer than usual.

In real life that might mean feeling a bit more jittery, a faster heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach if you're a heavy green tea drinker. Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based only on animal research, so for most people a normal cup or two won't be a problem. If you notice extra caffeine jitters, ease back and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

“Glipizide and metformin (Metaglip) already work hard to pull blood sugar down, which is exactly why this list of 307 ingredients deserves genuine vigilance rather than a shrug. Most of them, 239, can lower glucose on their own, and stacked on this pill the combined effect can tip into true hypoglycemia.”

About Green Tea

What is Green Tea?

Green Tea
  • Antioxidant support
  • Weight loss
  • Heart health
  • Mental alertness
  • Cancer risk reduction

Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
