Here's the gist with Avandamet (which combines metformin and rosiglitazone). The concern isn't about green tea changing how this medicine works or how strong it is. Instead, it's about your liver. Concentrated green tea extract supplements have, in rare cases, been tied to liver injury. Rosiglitazone can also stress the liver in some people, so the worry is that the two together might add up and put a little extra strain on it.

To be fair, this is mostly theoretical and based on scattered reports, so it's considered unlikely. Drinking regular cups of green tea is very different from taking high-dose extract pills. If you do use a green tea supplement, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor, and watch for yellowing skin, dark urine, or belly pain.

If you're taking Avandamet (the combo of metformin and rosiglitazone) to manage your blood sugar, here's the honest scoop on green tea. The concern on file is that green tea, and the caffeine it contains, might nudge your blood sugar a little in one direction or the other. The catch is the evidence is genuinely mixed. Some reports suggest it could lower blood sugar, others suggest it could raise it, so we can't even say which way to expect.

Because this is rated minor and unlikely, your usual cup or two of green tea probably won't throw things off. Concentrated green tea extract pills are where I'd be a bit more cautious. If you notice signs of low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) or higher readings than normal, check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Green tea contains caffeine. Animal research suggests that metformin can reduce caffeine metabolism. Theoretically, concomitant use can increase caffeine serum concentrations and the risk of caffeine adverse effects.

Here's a twist worth knowing about. With this combo, it's actually the caffeine in green tea that may be affected, not your diabetes medication. The metformin half of Avandamet might slow down how your body clears caffeine. In plain terms, the caffeine could hang around longer than usual, so a couple of cups of green tea might hit a little harder.

What might that feel like? The usual caffeine stuff, such as jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. To be clear, this is a theoretical, minor concern based only on animal research, so for most folks normal tea drinking is no big deal. If you're sensitive to caffeine or use concentrated green tea extracts, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
