Phenelzine Sulfate falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Green Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Green tea contains caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis. In a case report, a patient that consumed 10-12 cups of caffeinated coffee and took the MAOI tranylcypromine presented with severe hypertension. Hypertension was resolved after the patient switched to drinking decaffeinated coffee.

Here's the deal with green tea and Nardil (phenelzine). Phenelzine is an MAOI, and one of its quirks is that it makes you sensitive to certain substances that can push your blood pressure up. Green tea naturally contains caffeine, and in lab studies caffeine also blocks the same MAO enzymes. The worry is that loading up on caffeine could stack with phenelzine and trigger a sudden blood pressure spike, called a hypertensive crisis, with symptoms like a pounding headache, racing heart, sweating, or chest tightness.

Now, keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern based mostly on pharmacology and one old case report involving 10 to 12 cups of strong coffee. A cup or two of green tea is far less caffeine and unlikely to cause trouble. The bigger caution is concentrated green tea extracts. Before using those, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
