Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Tasimelteon
Tasimelteon falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Green Tea interacts with.
In vitro and in vivo research suggests that green tea can inhibit intestinal CYP3A and induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzymes. However, this effect is unlikely to be clinically significant, as green tea does not appear to affect CYP3A4 activity in humans.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the good news on this pairing: tasimelteon (Hetlioz) relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to be broken down, and green tea has only a weak, mixed effect on that enzyme in the lab. In test tubes it looks like green tea might slow CYP3A4 in the gut but speed it up in the liver, yet in actual people it doesn't seem to meaningfully change how this enzyme works.
So in real life, drinking green tea is very unlikely to change how well tasimelteon helps you sleep or to cause extra grogginess. The evidence here is theoretical, based on lab studies, not human results. Normal cups of tea are no concern. If you're using concentrated green tea extract pills, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

About Green Tea
What is Green Tea?
- Antioxidant support
- Weight loss
- Heart health
- Mental alertness
- Cancer risk reduction
Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
