Hibiscus Sabdariffa + Aliskiren
Aliskiren brand name: Tekturna.
Aliskiren falls into 2 drug categories that Hibiscus Sabdariffa can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking Hibiscus sabdariffa with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with whole categories of medication. Aliskiren falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hibiscus Sabdariffa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Aliskiren
Aliskiren falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.
Most clinical evidence suggests that taking Hibiscus sabdariffa reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In animal research, Hibiscus sabdariffa increased the hypotensive effects of single doses of losartan and amlodipine.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: hibiscus tea has a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. Aliskiren (Tekturna) is already lowering your blood pressure, so stacking the two together could, in theory, push it down a little more than you intend. If that happens, you might notice things like feeling dizzy or lightheaded, getting up too fast leaving you woozy, tiredness, or even a faint feeling.
I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This concern is mostly theoretical and based on how these things work, with some animal studies on similar blood pressure drugs. An occasional cup of hibiscus tea is unlikely to cause trouble, but concentrated supplements are a different story. If you use hibiscus regularly, just check your blood pressure at home and chat with your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Aliskiren also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with hibiscus and Tekturna (aliskiren). In lab dish studies, concentrated hibiscus extract slowed down an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear aliskiren. If that happened in real life, a bit more aliskiren could linger in your system, which might nudge your blood pressure lower than expected. Since both already lower blood pressure, you could feel dizzy, lightheaded, or tired.
Now the honest part: this is theoretical and has never actually been reported in people. A cup or two of hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. I'd just keep an eye on your blood pressure readings and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before adding concentrated hibiscus supplements.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aliskiren page
“Aliskiren (Tekturna) has one job, keeping blood pressure down, and most of this list pulls on that same rope. Of the 227 supplements with an interaction on file, 119 have blood-pressure effects of their own, stacking with the drug until pressure drops too far (fish oil is a common one) or pushing back against it.”

About Hibiscus Sabdariffa
What is Hibiscus Sabdariffa?
- High blood pressure
- Heart and cholesterol health
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Fever and general wellness
Hibiscus sabdariffa is a tart, cranberry-flavored plant most often consumed as a tea, and its best-studied use is for mildly lowering blood pressure. Evidence for other uses is limited, and while hibiscus tea is generally well tolerated in food amounts, concentrated supplements should be used cautiously and avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it for a medical condition.
About Aliskiren
What Is Aliskiren Used For?
Brand name: Tekturna
Aliskiren and Tekturna tablets are both approved to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs) or more. Lowering high blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like strokes and heart attacks.
Managing blood pressure is usually part of a broader plan that may also include diet changes, exercise, cholesterol control, and other medications. Many people need more than one blood pressure drug to reach their goal.

Natural Medicines records Aliskiren as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Hibiscus Sabdariffa — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
