Hibiscus Sabdariffa + Venlafaxine
Venlafaxine brand names: Effexor XR, Effexor.
Hibiscus Sabdariffa has a minor interaction with Venlafaxine. Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP2D6 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Venlafaxine
Venlafaxine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP2D6. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break down venlafaxine (Effexor). In lab studies, hibiscus extract appears to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in a real person, venlafaxine could clear a little more slowly and build up slightly, which might nudge up its usual side effects like nausea, jitteriness, a faster heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or higher blood pressure.
The important part: this is purely theoretical, seen only in test-tube research and never reported in actual patients. A cup or two of tart hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated supplement doses are less studied, so if you plan to use those regularly, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up first.

- High blood pressure
- Heart and cholesterol health

- Fever and general wellness
Hibiscus sabdariffa is a tart, cranberry-flavored plant most often consumed as a tea, and its best-studied use is for mildly lowering blood pressure. Venlafaxine Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Venlafaxine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Hibiscus Sabdariffa — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
