Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel combo). Indole-3-carbinol, the compound from broccoli and cabbage, may speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 that helps clear estrogen from your body. If that happens, the estrogen portion of your pill could be broken down a little faster, which in theory might slightly lower its levels.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is: it comes only from animal and lab studies, not from real-world cases in women, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, anything that could nudge a birth control pill's effectiveness down is worth a quick chat. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before using an I3C supplement while on this pill. The small amounts in food are very unlikely to matter.

Your pill, Ovral and its generics, combines two hormones: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and norgestrel (a progestin). Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is interesting because it can nudge how your liver processes estrogen and may have a mild anti-estrogen effect. In theory, that could chip away at the estrogen part of your pill and make it work a little less smoothly. In real life, that might show up as breakthrough spotting or irregular bleeding.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: it comes from lab and animal studies, not solid human trials, so this is more of a caution than a proven problem. Eating broccoli or cabbage is not a concern; concentrated supplement doses are the question mark. Please run any I3C supplement by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing it with your birth control.
