Sildenafil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Ipriflavone interacts with.

Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include amitriptyline (Elavil), diazepam (Valium), estradiol (Estrace), tacrine (Cognex), verapamil (Calan), warfarin (Coumadin), zileuton (Zyflo), and others.

Here's the gist: your body clears sildenafil using liver enzymes, and ipriflavone may gently slow one of them (CYP2C9). On paper, that could mean a bit more sildenafil hanging around in your blood than usual. With higher levels, you might notice more of sildenafil's typical effects, things like headache, facial flushing, a stuffy nose, lightheadedness, or a dip in blood pressure.

I want to keep this in perspective though. This concern comes only from lab-style research, not from real patients, so it's mostly theoretical. Sildenafil also leans more on a different enzyme (CYP3A4) for its breakdown, which softens the worry further. Still, before pairing these two, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor so they can look at your whole picture.

What Is Sildenafil Used For?

Brand name: Revatio

Sildenafil treats two distinct conditions depending on the product. Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are approved for erectile dysfunction (ED) — difficulty getting or keeping an erection. Generic sildenafil tablets and oral film are also approved for ED.

Revatio and several generic sildenafil products (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) are used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow the disease from getting worse. Revatio oral suspension and injection are also approved for PAH in children ages 1 to 17.
