Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Co-Danthrusate already pairs a stimulant laxative (danthron) with a stool softener (docusate). Jalap is itself a very strong stimulant laxative. So you'd basically be stacking two bowel stimulants on top of each other, and that's where the trouble comes from. This isn't about one drug raising the other's blood level. It's about both pushing the gut in the same direction at the same time.

Together they can cause heavy diarrhea, belly cramping, and real fluid and salt (electrolyte) losses, which can leave you feeling dizzy, weak, or dehydrated. This concern is based on how these products work rather than on hard studies, but the caution makes sense. Please don't add jalap to your laxative routine without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Jalap

What is Jalap?

  • Constipation
  • Strong laxative ('purgative') effect
  • Traditional remedy to 'clear out' the bowels
  • Historical use in folk medicine

Jalap is a powerful traditional laxative made from the root of a Mexican morning-glory plant. It is rarely used today because it can cause violent diarrhea, cramping, and dehydration, and safer laxatives are available. It is not recommended for routine self-treatment, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.
