Spironolactone falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Jalap interacts with.

Jalap has diuretic effects. Overuse of jalap might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking jalap along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia.
Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's a twist worth knowing about. The general worry on file is that jalap, a harsh stimulant laxative with some diuretic action, can drain potassium from the body, and it's flagged alongside diuretics that do the same. But spironolactone is a little different from most water pills. It's a potassium-sparing diuretic, meaning it actually helps your body hold onto potassium rather than dump it.

So in your case, the two roughly pull in opposite directions on potassium. The bigger real-world concern is the heavy fluid and salt loss jalap can cause through violent diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration, dizziness, and kidney strain, especially on top of any diuretic. This caution is theoretical, based on how these substances behave, not strong studies. Jalap isn't recommended for self-treatment anyway, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Jalap is a powerful traditional laxative made from the root of a Mexican morning-glory plant. It is rarely used today because it can cause violent diarrhea, cramping, and dehydration, and safer laxatives are available. It is not recommended for routine self-treatment, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.

What Is Spironolactone Used For?

Brand names: Aldactone, Spiroton, Carospir

Spironolactone tablets (including Aldactone) are used to treat moderate-to-severe heart failure, high blood pressure, and fluid retention (edema) caused by liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome. They are also used to diagnose and manage primary hyperaldosteronism — a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone.

Spironolactone oral suspension shares several of these uses — heart failure, high blood pressure, and edema from liver cirrhosis — but is not the same as Aldactone and is not therapeutically interchangeable with it. Your prescriber will choose the right form for your situation.
