Jalap and Bendroflumethiazide, Nadolol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Bendroflumethiazide, Nadolol

Bendroflumethiazide, Nadolol falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Jalap interacts with.

Jalap has diuretic effects. Overuse of jalap might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking jalap along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia.
Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your medication, Corzide, is a combo pill: bendroflumethiazide (a water pill, or thiazide diuretic) plus nadolol (a beta-blocker for blood pressure). The thiazide part already nudges your body to flush out potassium along with extra fluid. Here's the concern with jalap: it's a harsh traditional laxative that causes violent diarrhea, and heavy fluid loss from the gut can drain potassium too. Stack that on top of your diuretic and your potassium could dip too low.

Low potassium can leave you feeling weak, crampy, tired, or cause an irregular heartbeat. Honestly, this pairing is based on theory more than hard studies, but jalap isn't something I'd reach for anyway. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

“Green tea worries me most. In human studies it cut blood levels of nadolol by roughly 85 percent, enough to undermine Corzide (bendroflumethiazide with nadolol) as a blood pressure treatment, and it earns one of the 12 major ratings here.”

About Jalap

What is Jalap?

  • Constipation
  • Strong laxative ('purgative') effect
  • Traditional remedy to 'clear out' the bowels
  • Historical use in folk medicine

Jalap is a powerful traditional laxative made from the root of a Mexican morning-glory plant. It is rarely used today because it can cause violent diarrhea, cramping, and dehydration, and safer laxatives are available. It is not recommended for routine self-treatment, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.
