Jalap has stimulant laxative effects. In some people jalap can cause diarrhea. Diarrhea can increase the effects of warfarin, increase international normalized ratio (INR), and increase the risk of bleeding. Advise patients who take warfarin not to take excessive amounts of jalap.

Here's the connection with warfarin. Jalap is a harsh stimulant laxative, and in some people it triggers heavy diarrhea. When you lose a lot of fluid and your gut is moving fast, your body can absorb and handle vitamin K and warfarin differently, and that can push your INR higher. A higher INR means your blood is thinner than intended, which raises your risk of bleeding, things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or blood in your urine or stool.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not strong human studies. Warfarin is a narrow-margin drug, though, so even small swings matter. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Just talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing jalap with warfarin.

Jalap is a powerful traditional laxative made from the root of a Mexican morning-glory plant. It is rarely used today because it can cause violent diarrhea, cramping, and dehydration, and safer laxatives are available. It is not recommended for routine self-treatment, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
