Amiloride, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Jalap interacts with.

Jalap has diuretic effects. Overuse of jalap might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking jalap along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia.
Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the thing to know about pairing jalap with your amiloride/hydrochlorothiazide combo. Jalap is a harsh laxative that can trigger heavy diarrhea, and that means losing a lot of fluid and minerals through the gut. Your water pill is already pulling extra fluid and salt out through your kidneys. Stack the two together and you could get dehydrated, with low potassium or sodium showing up as muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness when you stand, or an irregular heartbeat.

One nice point in your favor: the amiloride part actually helps hold onto potassium, which is partly why this combo was chosen for you. Still, this concern is theoretical and based on how these things work, not on hard studies. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before using jalap.

Jalap is a powerful traditional laxative made from the root of a Mexican morning-glory plant. It is rarely used today because it can cause violent diarrhea, cramping, and dehydration, and safer laxatives are available. It is not recommended for routine self-treatment, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
