Methazolamide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Jalap interacts with.

Jalap has diuretic effects. Overuse of jalap might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking jalap along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia.
Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing. Methazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor for glaucoma, and one of its quirks is that it tends to make you lose potassium in your urine. Jalap is a harsh stimulant laxative, and the worry on file is that it can add to that potassium loss, partly through fluid and electrolyte loss from the violent diarrhea it causes.

If your potassium drops too low, you might feel muscle weakness, cramps, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat. I'll be honest, this concern is mostly theoretical and based on how the two work, not on strong studies. Still, jalap is rough on the body regardless. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Jalap is a powerful traditional laxative made from the root of a Mexican morning-glory plant. It is rarely used today because it can cause violent diarrhea, cramping, and dehydration, and safer laxatives are available. It is not recommended for routine self-treatment, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.

What Is Methazolamide Used For?

Brand name: Neptazane

Methazolamide tablets are used to treat eye conditions where lowering intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) is expected to help. These include chronic open-angle glaucoma and secondary glaucoma.

Methazolamide tablets are also used before surgery in acute angle-closure glaucoma, when reducing eye pressure ahead of the procedure is needed. Note that long-term use in angle-closure glaucoma is not appropriate.
