Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: jalap is a strong stimulant laxative, and your Perdiem product already contains senna, which is also a stimulant laxative (plus psyllium, a bulk-forming fiber). Stacking two bowel stimulants together is like stepping on the gas twice. You can end up with much harsher cramping, watery diarrhea, and urgent trips to the bathroom.

The bigger worry is fluid and mineral loss. Too much diarrhea can leave you dehydrated and can drop your potassium, which may cause weakness, dizziness, or an irregular heartbeat. This concern is based mainly on how these laxatives work rather than hard studies, but the caution is reasonable. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your routine on your own.

“Perdiem pairs psyllium fiber with senna, a stimulant laxative, and that senna half is why this list of 46 interacting supplements calls for genuine care. Twenty-nine entries are stimulant laxative herbs themselves; layering them on senna compounds fluid and potassium loss, and the strongest of them, jalap, is rated major.”

About Jalap

What is Jalap?

  • Constipation
  • Strong laxative ('purgative') effect
  • Traditional remedy to 'clear out' the bowels
  • Historical use in folk medicine

Jalap is a powerful traditional laxative made from the root of a Mexican morning-glory plant. It is rarely used today because it can cause violent diarrhea, cramping, and dehydration, and safer laxatives are available. It is not recommended for routine self-treatment, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.
