Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the tug-of-war to know about: Clonidine works to lower your blood pressure by calming the nerve signals that tighten your blood vessels and speed up your heart. Khat does the opposite. Its stimulant chemicals (mainly cathinone, which acts a lot like amphetamine) push blood pressure and heart rate up. So the two are pulling in opposite directions, and khat can blunt the blood pressure control you're counting on from clonidine.

In real life, that could mean your readings creep back up, or you feel jittery, flushed, or have a pounding heartbeat. This is rated a moderate, possible interaction from lower-quality studies, so it's not certain for everyone. On top of that, khat is illegal in the U.S. Please don't change your clonidine on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Clonidine Used For?

Brand name: Catapres

Clonidine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Several products — including Clonidine Hydrochloride tablets, Javadin oral solution, Nexiclon XR extended-release tablets, and Catapres-TTS skin patches — are approved for this use, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Extended-release formulations — including Onyda XR oral suspension and clonidine hydrochloride extended-release tablets (such as Kapvay) — are approved to treat ADHD in children and teenagers ages 6 to 17, either on their own or alongside stimulant medications. Separately, clonidine injection products (Duraclon and others) are used alongside opioid pain medicines to treat severe cancer pain that opioids alone cannot control adequately.
